Successful Bridge Walkway Illumination…

The Market Street Bridge is a historic landmark spanning the Ohio River, connecting Steubenville, Ohio and Follansbee, West Virginia. It is a steel suspension bridge spanning a length of 1,794 feet and built in 1905. After hearing reports that the bridge might be closing, city councils on both sides of the river got together and petitioned for the bridge to be repaired and beautified.

Work begins in 2010 cleaning and repairing the bridge’s steel structure, applying a penetrant sealer, as well as special calcium sulfonate paint.

Since then, the bridge underwent construction on and off since January 2010. Due to the weather, the bridge renovation was done in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of cleaning and repairing the bridge’s steel structure, applying a penetrant sealer, as well as special calcium sulfonate paint. The public was involved in the color selection through an online poll on the WVDOT website. The winning colors were Mountaineer Blue and Gold, representing West Virginia state colors.

During the Phase 2, crews hung a “necklace” of 146 decorative lights along the cables, as well as pedestrian lighting along the walkways. One of the few changes that the bridge underwent was lowering the clearance by one foot to prevent overweight vehicles from violating the 5-ton weight limit.

The Market Street Bridge renovation was a huge success, turning an old structure into a postcard like image, and delivering a sense of accomplishment and pride for the surrounding communities.

Paramount is proud to have been part of the renovation process, with the assistance of our Ohio representative, Gordon Vink, Lighting Systems of Columbus and the architectural firm of Burgess and Niple in Columbus, Ohio. The Market Street Bridge features our J9 Series luminaire to safely illuminate the pedestrian walkway.

The Market Street Bridge utilized Paramount’s durable stainless steel J9 Series luninaires for illumination along the pedestrian walkway.

Paramount would once again like to give thanks to our partners on this project.  With the assistance of our Ohio sales representative Lighting Systems of Columbus and the architectural firm of Burgess and Niple, the historic Market Street Bridge will continue to provide service to the surrounding communities. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the reopening of the beautifully revitalized bridge on December 7, 2011.
